Sleep Apnea May Increase Your Chances of Getting Pneumonia

Posted .

Normally people would not describe sleep apnea as being dangerous. However, if you were to consult a doctor, they’d tell you that sleep apnea could be a predecessor of more serious and potentially life-threatening health conditions. Sleep apnea occurs when you stop breathing during sleep and oxygen is cut off from your brain. It can also lead to severe health problems such as heart disease, obesity, fatigue, obesity, and high blood pressure. What’s worse is that most people don’t even know they have the condition.

Research published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal discusses how people with sleep apnea may also be more likely to contract pneumonia. The study lasted over ten years, and researchers analyzed a total of 34,100 patients. The results of the study were surprising.

Almost 10 percent of patients with sleep apnea caught pneumonia, compared to 7 percent of participants who did not have any sleep or health disorders. Patients with sleep apnea also had a higher chance of contracting pneumonia in the future.
