Part of protecting your oral health is practicing good daily hygiene and seeing a dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning. Sometimes oral health issues arise in between visits that suggest potential trouble and require immediate attention.
In this post, Dr. Jerry Strauss of Aesthetic Dental Care of New Jersey reveals signs that indicate you should see your dentist as soon as possible.
You have a toothache.
Toothaches can have many causes, including a cavity, abscess, broken tooth, cracked tooth, damaged restoration or extreme wear and tear. If you have a tooth that hurts or is very sore, you should see your dentist to determine the underlying cause and address it.
Your gums are red, puffy or bleed when you brush or floss.
Red, puffy gums that bleed after brushing or flossing could indicate periodontal disease. Left untreated, periodontal disease attacks the tissues and bones that hold your teeth in place. It is best to identify signs of periodontal disease early and address it as soon as possible.
You notice gaps or spaces between your teeth and gums.
Another indication of periodontal disease is “pockets” or gaps or spaces between the teeth and gums. In a healthy mouth, the gum tissue should hug the teeth snugly, but if periodontal disease develops, the gums start to pull away from the teeth. The bigger the space, the easier it is for bacteria and tartar to hide there and further threaten the structures holding the teeth in place.
Your teeth are loose or appear to have shifted in your mouth.
Loose or shifting teeth are a red flag that suggest you may have an infection or jawbone loss. If you notice teeth that are loose, or changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite down, you should see your dentist immediately for a thorough exam.
You are self-conscious or embarrassed by your smile.
You deserve to have a smile that you can proudly show off to the world. If an imperfectly shaped tooth or stained smile makes you feel self-conscious, don’t hold off on exploring your treatment options. It could be easier and quicker than you think to transform your smile! Speak with a cosmetic dentist about what you can do to achieve a more attractive smile.
