With a passion for improving others’ dental health, our experienced dentist, Dr. Jerry Strauss, recounts his experience on a recent service mission trip.
I just returned in December from another volunteer mission to a free children’s dental clinic in Jerusalem. This clinic was started by a microbiologist who survived the holocaust and knew nothing about dentistry. She just perceived the reality that many children were not receiving dental care and were only being treated for emergencies and extractions. So, she set out to help correct the problem, obtained funding through contributions from individuals, and sought out volunteer dentists from across the globe. She made this her mission and it succeeded.
Many children from all walks of life are treated at no cost to them and, instead of just emergency care, they receive preventive care and learn to value their dental health. Treatment is rendered by dentists from many countries that come for 1-2 weeks per year. Many of the children speak no English, but their hugs at the end of the appointment are a universal language for appreciation. And I cherish every one of them.
I’m looking forward to another chance to continue on my mission to help more of these children improve their lives. If you’d like to learn more about the service trips I have participated in, or if you would like to set up an appointment with me, please feel free to contact Aesthetic Dental Care.
