Fix Small Chips, Cracks and Flaws with Dental Bonding
Would you like to repair dental imperfections but keep putting it off because of the perceived time commitment and cost? You may be a great candidate for dental bonding, a quick and cost-effective treatment to restore an attractive appearance and function to teeth with minor flaws. Teeth are stronger and look great after only a single, relatively short dental appointment.
When dental bonding is performed by an experienced, skilled dentist, the bonded teeth look no different from the surrounding healthy teeth. Treatment is also virtually painless.
It’s essential to find a trusted cosmetic dentist like Dr. Jerry Strauss that has demonstrated great results with dental bonding. Dr. Strauss would be glad to meet with you and discuss your dental bonding options in more detail.
What Dental Bonding Can Fix
Dental bonding is one of the most versatile cosmetic dentistry treatment options that Dr. Strauss offers. It can restore the look and function to teeth blemished by any of the following:
- Small chips or cracks
- Stains or discoloration
- Small spaces between the teeth
- Abnormal tooth shape or size (i.e., “short” teeth)
- Uneven tooth edges
- Extreme wear, possibly caused by chronic tooth grinding or clenching
Note that bonding cannot treat every dental problem. More severe damage and tooth decay are better remedied with a restorative dentistry solution like placing a dental filling or crown. Dr. Strauss can examine your area(s) of concern and recommend whether dental bonding or another treatment is more suitable for your needs.
Dental Bonding Treatment, Step by Step
Dr. Strauss’s first step of dental bonding treatment is to lightly etch the affected tooth enamel to help the bonding material better adhere. He selects the composite resin bonding material color to match the surrounding tooth structure perfectly.
Then, Dr. Strauss applies the bonding material to the affected tooth or teeth. It feels a little bit like putty. He applies it in thin layers and smoothes them out so the bonding material looks like natural tooth enamel. This is not painful or uncomfortable.
Next, Dr. Strauss uses a special high-intensity light to harden the bonding material, and artfully sculpts it to achieve the necessary result — whether that might be lengthening a short tooth, covering up a small chip or crack or closing a space between two front teeth.
Once Dr. Strauss has made the appropriate modifications, he polishes the bonding so it looks translucent like natural tooth enamel.
Bonding is a virtually painless process. Because bonding only affects the surface of the teeth, where there are no nerve endings, treatment does not trigger any pain.
Dental bonding can be performed as a standalone procedure or combined with other cosmetic dentistry treatments as part of a comprehensive smile makeover. Bonding is a great complement to the placement of porcelain veneers or crowns, or teeth whitening treatment.
