Best Options to Replace a Damaged Tooth
In many cases, minor dental damage (e.g., chips and tiny cracks), can be remedied with cosmetic or restorative fixes like fillings or crowns. However, more serious tooth fractures or damage may reduce the tooth’s chances of being saved — sometimes, extremely damaged teeth need to be extracted and replaced.
Dr. Jerry Strauss of Aesthetic Dental Care sees many patients with damaged and missing teeth. He understands the pain and discomfort a damaged tooth can cause, and how it can affect the ability to chew, speak and smile normally. If you have a badly damaged tooth that has to be pulled, his goal is to help you reclaim a complete, healthy smile as quickly as possible with a strong, attractive tooth replacement.
Fixed Dental Bridge
Fixed dental bridges fill the space left by one or more missing teeth by attaching to the natural teeth adjacent to the gap. A traditional dental bridge is constructed from two crowns with a false tooth in the middle. The false tooth fits into the gap and the crowns are cemented onto the teeth on either side of the gap. The bridge can only be removed by a dentist.
Like a fixed dental bridge, a partial denture relies on the surrounding natural teeth for support. A partial denture consists of a false tooth attached to a pink plastic framework that mimics gum tissue. The false tooth fits into the gap and the framework attaches to the backs of the surrounding teeth with tiny clasps or loops.
Dental implants offer other unique advantages, too. They do not require the support or strength of the surrounding teeth, so there is no need to prepare or modify healthy tooth structure. Anchored by a titanium post or screw surgically placed in the jawbone, implants also help keep the underlying bone stimulated and strong, preventing other complications. With the proper care and maintenance, they can last a lifetime.
