Is dental phobia common?
Dental phobia is very common. It is estimated that 9 to 15 percent of Americans (up to 40 million people) suffer from some form of dental anxiety. In a study of people who do not regularly see the dentist, 36 percent of those questioned listed fear as the main reason they do not get regular checkups.

What causes dental anxiety?
As with most phobias, there are various reasons that patients suffer from dental anxiety. Some of the main reasons for dental phobia include: pain (more specifically the fear of pain), past negative dental experiences, embarrassment/self-consciousness of current dental health, and feelings of helplessness or loss of control.

Will I sleep through my dentistry treatment?
Although you may feel like you are asleep, the conscious sedation methods used for dental phobia at Aesthetic Dental Care of New Jersey do not cause you to sleep.

What are some safe ways to deal with dental phobia?
Depending on the level of your fear, you may be able to deal with your dental phobia simply by meeting with Essex County cosmetic dentist Jerry Strauss, DMD. By discussing your fears with Dr. Strauss before any procedures, you may learn information and techniques that will ease your anxiety.
If you have a heightened level of dental phobia, Fairfield-based Aesthetic Dental Care of New Jersey offers two methods of conscious sedation dentistry. Using these methods, you will be in a relaxed state during your procedure and will have very little recollection of the treatment.

Do I have to go to a hospital for any of those procedures?
No. All of the conscious sedation procedures used for dental phobia can be performed at our Fairfield, New Jersey office. Dr. Glen Atlas, a board-certified anesthesiologist, uses hospital quality equipment at Aesthetic Dental Care of New Jersey.

My teeth are in such bad condition, how do I know the dentist won't yell at me or make me feel foolish?
Patients with dental phobia travel from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York to have Dr. Strauss complete their dental treatments, including dental implants and TMJ therapy. Dr. Strauss does not criticize his patients, especially those with dental phobia; instead, he encourages them to continue their dental health.

My fear of needles is greater than my dental phobia. Can needles be avoided?
Although Aesthetic Dental Care of New Jersey offers IV sedation dentistry, we also offer oral conscious sedation dentistry. There are no needles involved in the latter dental phobia treatment. Once you are sedated, there may be needles used to administer Novocain, but you will not be aware of them. Many of the other processes that used to involve needles can be completed through other methods including laser dentistry.
