Flossing is just as important as brushing your teeth when it comes to oral care. It is important to understand that brushing alone leaves as much as 40% of the tooth surfaces untouched. By augmenting your brushing routine with flossing, you are getting into all the areas between and under teeth that a toothbrush simply cannot reach. Flossing at night is particularly beneficial, because that is when bacterial and plaque builds up most. It isn’t just your gums and mouth that benefit from regular flossing, but your overall well-being. Periodontal disease, which can be prevented with regular flossing, has been linked to heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. Your teeth can last a lifetime if you practice basic dental care, which involves brushing and flossing regularly, eating a mouth-healthy diet, and visiting your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Developing good dental health habits is the best way to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
If it’s been too long since you had professional oral care, we invite you to call Aesthetic Dental Care of New Jersey at (973) 287-3829 to schedule an appointment and get you back on track. Even severe periodontal disease may be arrested with proper dental treatment.
Aesthetic Dental Care is located at 389 Passaic Avenue in Fairfield, NJ (973) 287-3829

Keep Smiling,

Dr. Jerry Strauss

P.S. Just like most everything, there is acorrect way to floss. Be sure toask your dentist for instructions, and follow them toget the most benefit.

The noise made when you open your mouth or chew is no laughing matter. TMJ is a disorder of the jaw joint where the ball, socket and disk are damaged or misaligned. This puts pressure and undue wear on the joint, causing deterioration of the structures. The body naturally attempts to realign the joint using muscles in the face, jaw and neck. As these muscles become fatigued, additional muscles in the shoulders, back and arms also become stressed. This results in varying degrees of pain and dysfunction, including headaches, facial pain, noise emanating from the TM joints difficulty in opening and chewing, numbness in the face or hands, ringing in the ears, dizziness, and postural problems. Grinding, or bruxing, is your way of trying to find the right position, an instinct that unfortunately only exacerbates all the other symptoms. Neuromuscular dentistry utilizes a combination of electromyography, ultrasound, and computer scans to track and relax facial, neck and back muscles, and guide your jaw into its ideal and most comfortable position. A neuromuscular orthotic maintains the position, and allows the joint to heal. Patients report relief of symptoms within hours of wearing a neuromuscular orthotic. The greatest advantage of neuromuscular dentistry is that it is completely noninvasive, as there is no surgery involved, and adjustments are easily made. There is no longer a need to suffer because of TMJ. A dentist skilled in the treatment, and with the proper equipment, can help. At Aesthetic Dental Care, we have both the expertise and hi-tech equipment to treat your TMJ issues. Call for your appointment today (973)227-8998…Aesthetic Dental Care is located at 389 Passaic Avenue in Fairfield, NJ.

P.S.Sometimes, the symptoms of TMJ dysfunction can be so unusual, and seemingly unrelated to your jaw, that most people, including physicians, don’t even consider that the problems could be jaw related.

Dry Mouth, called xerostomia, results from an inadequate flow of saliva, and is a symptom rather than a specific disorder. Adequate salivary flow lubricates oral tissues, cleanses the mouth and begins the digestive process as foods are chewed. When salivary flow is reduced, harmful organisms grow in the mouth. Left untreated, dry mouth may lead to oral yeast infection, a burning sensation, rampant tooth decay, bad breath and other oral health problems. Chronic dry mouth can make swallowing difficult. Drying irritates the soft tissues, which can make them inflamed and more susceptible to infection. Without the cleansing and shielding effects of adequate salivary flow, tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease become more common. Constant dryness and the lack of protection provided by saliva contribute to bad breath. Dry mouth also causes dentures to become uncomfortable. Prescribed and over-the-counter medications are the most common cause of dry mouth. These include antihistamines, decongestants, pain killers, diuretics, anti-hypertensives and anti-depressants. Dry mouth also may result from radiation treatment for head and neck cancers, salivary gland disease, emotional stress, and auto immune diseases. Pregnancy and menopause have also been associated with dry mouth. Increasing fluid intake might alleviate dry mouth. Your dentist or physician may recommend using artificial saliva-available at local pharmacies to keep oral tissues moist. Other remedies include sugar-free gum or candy (to stimulate salivary flow); frequent sips of water; alcohol-free oral rinses; restricted intake of caffeine, alcohol and carbonated beverages.

P.S. Regular dental checkups are important, too. Taking good care of your teeth and gums is critical if you have dry mouth to minimize decay and periodontal disease. Brush and floss twice a day. Your dentist may recommend additional fluoride products to help control tooth decay. If you have specific questions about your dry mouth symptoms, we invite you to contact us at Aesthetic Dental Care of New Jersey for more information.

At Aesthetic Dental Care we’re set up for comfort. So when people come in the first thing they see is not a typical waiting room but it’s a reception area that’s really based on being living room style so that there’s a comfort level immediately and we try to convey that through the massage chairs, through the paraffin hand dips, through the refreshment center. We’re just trying to make people more comfortable and we’re trying to get to them to know that it’s okay to relax here. Most unique situation at our office is probably the relationship building. That’s what we’re trying to establish, we’re trying to be different, we’re trying to get to know people.

Went to Syracuse University as an undergraduate, followed that up with dental school at Boston University where I got a DMD degree along with the master’s degree in nutritional biochemistry. I was the first one to combine the two programs at the school and that was another passion of mine, the nutritional biochemistry end of it. So I combined those. After that I went to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New York for a one year residency and then went out into practice. Went to practice for 20 years in upstate New York in Binghamton and then moved to New Jersey.
In Binghamton we had a practice that was a little bit more typical and it was a busy type of practice and it wasn’t really a relationship type of practice, it was more volume-oriented. And we decided after a while that’s not what we wanted, we wanted to slow things down, we wanted to change the face of the practice. And that’s when we changed to a more relationship-based practice. And we looked around the country at where we wanted to be and we found an area in New Jersey in particular in Caldwell, Fairfield, and we decided this was where we wanted to make our home.
