A recent study from the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS) shows that 30% of Americans avoid the dentist because of fear or anxiety. Dr. Jerry Strauss, a dentist in New Jersey, says he not only uses sedation dentistry to alleviate patient fears, but also create positive dental experiences. He adds that patients need to discuss all available options with their dentist, and develop a plan that meets their needs and expectations when considering sedation dentistry.

The Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (DOCS) recently conducted a study that found 30% of Americans avoid dental visits because of fear or anxiety. Dr. Jerry Strauss provides a wide range of dental treatments, including general, sedation, and cosmetic dentistry in New Jersey. He says sedation dentistry allows his patients to relax, which in turn helps create positive dental experiences and safe, effective results. When choosing a sedation dentistry practice, Dr. Strauss recommends discussing all available options for sedation, as well as the dentist’s experience with each procedure.

Also commonly referred to as sleep dentistry, Dr. Strauss says the name can be misleading as the patient actually remains conscious throughout the entire procedure. The purpose of sedation dentistry according to Dr. Strauss is simply to put the patient in a state of relaxation to ensure they are not consumed by the fear they typically experience during dental treatment.

While intravenous sedation is the traditional method used for sedation dentistry, Dr. Strauss says less invasive methods are gaining in popularity, including inhalation sedation and oral sedation. Regardless of the method employed, Dr. Strauss says the dental procedure does not necessarily determine the type of sedation method. Instead, he stresses the need to address each individual treatment plan along with the specifics of a patient’s case before deciding on the type of sedation.

Ultimately, Dr. Strauss says patients appreciate the sedation dentistry option at his practice because they do not have to feel the pain or experience anxiety associated with any number of the procedures he offers. However, Dr. Strauss says the main benefit of alleviating these concerns for his patients is the fact that it allows him and his staff to maintain the oral health of his patients. “Fortunately, sedation techniques allow us to comfortably treat the true dental phobics, those people that have had bad experiences and have anxiety about dental treatment and even the medically compromised. I believe dental sedation is one of the real critical components to success in dentistry.”

Ultimately, Dr. Strauss says he has a new appreciation for the disease, adding that the course will be helpful in his practice and personal life, as he too suffers from the effects of sleep apnea.

Whether enhancing a patient’s smile with porcelain veneers, treating the host of medical problems associated with sleep apnea, or reducing his patients’ level of anxiety with sedation dentistry, Dr. Strauss says he constantly strives to create a positive experience with each office visit. Dr. Strauss remains committed to ongoing education as a means to provide the most up to date treatment options for his patients. A sleep apnea sufferer himself, Dr. Strauss has a special interest in the latest clinical research for the successful treatment of this deadly disease. Below he recounts highlights from the educational sessions each day.

Day 1:
Completed day 1 of an intensive 3 day sleep apnea program. Simply an outstanding presentation. Sleep apnea is a huge risk factor for hypertension, angina, glucose intolerance, stroke, gastroesophageal reflux, heart disease and asthma amongst others. And it is not limited to adults-children with daytime sleepiness, impaired cognitive function, ADHD, tonsillar problems can and should be treated early. Treat the problem, not the symptoms.

Day 2:
Second day of the 3 day dental sleep medicine program even better than the first which was great. Obstructive sleep apnea is a deadly disease but it can be managed. Day 3:

Dr. Strauss Supports US Troops with Candy Buy-Back Program

In support of U. S. troops serving overseas, Dr. Strauss is hosting a candy buy-back program this Halloween at his Fairfield cosmetic dentistry practice. Dr. Strauss encourages parents to bring their children to his Aesthetic Dental Care office to trade in their candy regardless of whether they are patients or not. In fact, he adds that there will be extra prize opportunities for current patients that refer friends and family to the event.

Located in Essex County, New Jersey, Dr. Strauss’ cosmetic dentistry practice will be buying all unopened Halloween candy for $1 per pound. Once the candy has been collected and weighed, Dr. Strauss and his staff will send it to U. S. troops around the world. In addition to the candy trade-in, Dr. Strauss will be handing out raffle tickets for each pound of candy, as well as special prizes for the largest candy donations.

After shattering the previous year’s record with 283 pounds of candy at the 2009 Candy Buy-back celebration, Dr. Strauss says he hopes he and his patients are able to do the same this year. TMJ Pain Relief Through Myotronics

Just returned from the Myotronics 44th anniversary seminar in Seattle. This is one of the great programs of the year with lectures given by the leading neuromuscular dentists in the country. There is so much information to take home from this seminar that will make people’s lives better. Myotronics pioneered the use of mild electrical stimulus to treat dental patients that were experiencing TMJ and facial pain. The importance of the role muscles play in occlusion has become widely recognized in recent years. The myomonitor allows for gradual relaxation of the muscles and restoration of normal blood flow and the washing away of waste products responsible for pain. Myotronics is also the manufacturer of the K-7 unit which is used to scientifically determine where a person’s most comfortable bite relationship is and can be verified with electromyography or muscle tracking. All of their products assist us in gaining pain relief for so many people that experience daily TMJ pain, migraine headaches, shoulder and neck discomfort, ringing in the ears, chewing difficulties and facial pain. Additionally, we now know that TMJ problems can be associated with sleep breathing disorders which can be life threatening. Dr. Strauss Returns from American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine in San Antonio, Texas

I just returned from the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine in San Antonio, Texas. It was really an international meeting with presenting dentists and physicians from around the globe. New ideas based in clinical research were shared in helping people who suffer from snoring and obructive sleep apnea and are unable to tolerate the CPAP machines. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a major problem in the population and can cause severe medical complications often times resulting in death. Fortunately, there is help available with oral appliance therapy which can be a “lifesaver.” Continuing education is a wonderful thing. It keeps us informed of new options to help our guests.

Dr. Strauss Attends Seminar for Advanced Neuromuscular Clinicians

Last week, I went to a terrific seminar with one of the pre-eminent neuromuscular dentists in the world, Dr. Clayton Chan. The program was limited to 20 dentists from the United States and Canada. They were all high level clinicians dedicated not only to dentistry but to relief of chronic head and neck pain. The program was dedicated to optimizing the technique to finding the most comfortable bite for each individual patient. This benefits the TMJ patient in that it allows us to obtain quicker pain relief and maintain a level of comfort. Neuromuscular dentistry is an evolving science that is delivering wonderful results to many people that have unable to find adequate pain relief from TMJ discomfort and headaches.

Trade-A-Treat Campaign Huge Success!

Thank you to all of our wonderful patients and community members who participated in our annual “Trade-A- Treat” campaign. In October, we invited you to bring us all of your unopened Halloween candy and you listened! We set a new record in collecting 283 pounds of candy which topped last years 110 pounds and are now packing it up to send to the troops in Iraq & Afghanistan.
